As adults, we remember how it feels to grow up and be exposed to world full of challenges. When a teenager or young child experiences a form of hair loss, their life can suddenly feel even more challenging.
As traumatic as it can be for the child, parents and carers can also find it upsetting as it can trigger a sense of helplessness. We help to prevent child’s hair loss and restore growth, through natural and gentle methods.
Many children are active in their daily life, making hair that falls out through play, exercise, and everyday styling, difficult to notice. Hair naturally falls out at the end of its growth cycle. If you regularly notice a few strands of hair on your child’s hairbrush or pillow, then this is no real cause for concern.
However, if you notice bald patches emerging on a child’s scalp, overall hair thinning, or experience clumps of hair falling out through brushing and washing, then it may be that your child is experiencing a form of hair loss.
The key indicator is a noticeable increase in the hair coming away from the scalp, and usually occurs in clumps rather than a few strands. Large amounts of hair left on your child’s pillow after sleeping is also an indicator that an imbalance may be occurring.
Men lose an average of 50-100 strands of hair a day.
Women lose an average of 100 strands a day.
Children's hair grows at varying cycles, but up to 100 strands is no real room for concern.
YELASAI approach hair loss from an Ayurveda perspective. Ayurveda is the understanding that everything in the body is connected. As children grow, they experience huge changes in the body which can cause certain cells and chemicals to be out of balance. When an imbalance occurs, symptoms such as hair loss and dry scalps can occur.
Ayurveda aims to supply the body with vital nutrition to help it restore internal balance and harmony.
In today’s modern world filled with social media and photoshop, children can put intense pressure on themselves to look and feel a certain way. When hair loss occurs, there is the potential for young people to lose any self-confidence they were working hard to build. This pressure can result in emotional imbalance and stress, which in turn can worsen the symptoms of hair loss.
To prevent children’s hair loss, we use Ayurveda inspired hair care that fuels the scalp with what it needs to get itself back into harmonious balance.
We encourage growth using minerals, vitamins, and fermented ingredients, which help to alleviate folicule stress and symptoms. As the symptoms of hair loss are reduced, emotional wellbeing is restored, which breaks the harmful cycle.
In babies It is very common for babies to lose their hair within the first few months of life. Hormonal changes, sleeping positions (friction), and general growth can all be triggers. It is rarely something to be concerned about is unlikely to be associated with a permanent medical condition.
Children: Nutrition, Bacterial infections, excess touching of hair, emotional stress and traumas, and autoimmune diseases are among the most common causes of hair loss in children aged 4-12
Teenagers – Vitamin deficiencies, puberty, emotional stress and traumas, medications, an imbalanced diet, excessive styling, and stress can influence teenage hair loss.
Alopecia Areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles. It appears as bald, circular patches on the scalp, giving it the commonly referred to name ‘circular hair loss’. The circular bald spots are smooth and do not necessarily cause irritation, as the inflammation occurs under the skin.
Some children may experience periods where their hair falls out and then regrows again repeatedly. If this occurs, we recommend noting the duration between the onset of symptoms and the interval of re-growth on a weekly basis. Speak with your children and ask them if they have noticed the patch before. The sooner you identify the symptoms, the easier it is to care for.
Rest assured, approximately half of children experiencing Alopecia Areata will grow their hair back without the use of treatment. It is worthwhile however to introduce a care plan, to maximise the chances of maintain growth. Unlike some medical treatments, our products are made from natural ingredients and are specifically designed to care for even the most sensitive of scalps. Considering a natural approach is safer for children and is in many cases more effective.

Ringworm is one of the most common infections among children that causes hair loss. It is highly contagious and displays worse symptoms in children than adults. Unlike the name, Ringworm is not caused by a worm but by a fungal infection passed on through soil, animals, and other humans.
The infection appears as ring shaped patches on the scalp and skin and causes scaling, reddening, inflammation, and crusting to the infected area. The symptoms usually appear after around 2 weeks of the child being in contact with the infection and differs in appearance for every child.
Although we promote natural ingredients wherever possible, we recommend seeking advice from a medical doctor to reduce your child’s case of ringworm. If left untreated, symptoms can worsen, and specific chemicals are required to counteract the infection. Ringworm can be incredibly uncomfortable and itchy for a child, so we advise seeking support as quickly as possible.
For post ringworm care, use mineral-rich shampoos that are kind to the scalp and help to naturally encourage growth back to the area. Avoid over styling your child’s hair and give it the fuel and time to heal itself. Our shampoos for hair loss and general scalp maintenance are designed to encourage growth back gently and naturally.
Our scalp oil delicately nurtures the scalp and helps to soothe dry, irritated and inflamed skin.
Our shampoo is designed to promote growth and gently balance the scalp whilst removing residue. Be kind to irritated scalps and help to provide it with nutrients and vitamins.
Traction alopecia refers to hair loss that is caused by long term tension or pulling of the hair. When the hair is over styled or excessively handled, the scalp is stretched which leads to breakages. Pulling on the hair loosens roots which interrupts its growth cycle, causing hair to prematurely come away from the scalp.
Children that wear tight ponytails, braids / plaits, and poorly placed extensions are more likely to develop symptoms. Prolonged tension on the scalp leads to potential scalp trauma. The affected areas can be itchy and irritating and can cause children to scratch the area which leads to inflammation. When children scratch the inflamed area, follicles are loosened which heighten the inflammation and eventually leads to hair loss.
Whenever possible, let your child’s hair hang lose and allow time to regrow. To encourage hair growth at home, use child-friendly, natural products that enhance the scalps ability to rejuvenate itself. YELASAI hair care is expertly designed to naturally promote hair growth without the use of silicones, synthetics, or hormones. Give your childs hair the best chance of acheiving longevity.

As children go through puberty, they experience big changes in the body. Changes in hormones can prevent chemicals reaching the scalp and can shift the scalps ability to fuel itself. When a teenager hits this stage, their world can completely change.
Teenage hair loss is preventable and with the correct guidance, children can naturally care for their hair in a maintainable way.
Eating habits can change during the puberty stage as teenagers become more independent. A shift in diet can shift the productivity of the immune system, and in turn cause hair loss.
Although hair loss in teenage males may be expected in your family, introducing natural hair loss shampoos can reduce symptoms on a long-term basis.
Hair can be a key target for transformation as a teenager. Bleach, harmful products, hair dyes, and over styling can help a teenager explore their own personal style. Unfortunately, exploring new styles can cause breakages, split ends, tension hair loss, fall out, and encourage early stages of alopecia
Exams, relationships, social pressures, family problems and inner-conflicts can be a big contributor to teenage hair loss.
1. Nutrition and Exercise
Talking to your child about the implications of an unbalanced diet and stress on the body is highly recommended. Stress and poor nutrition have a multitude of potential health risks, including hair loss. Wherever you can, produce meals that are high in vitamins and proteins. Encourage activities that release endorphins and get your child moving.
2. Gentle Advice
Giving kind and gentle advice, when your child is in a place to receive it, can encourage healthier habits. Hair loss can be an indicator of an eating disorder, so keep a regular eye on your child’s scalp if you have any concerns. Introduce your teenager to natural hair loss remedies, and help them to apply hair masques, oils, and growth tonics in a supportive manner.
We understand that it can be difficult to communicate with your child during this new phase of their life. Encouraging safe hair and health habits may not seem like a priority to your child, and they may be uninterested in any form of advice. When this occurs, it may be time to introduce some more ‘subtle’ methods.
3. Subtle methods
Simply switching up the shampoo in your family bathroom can prevent teenage hair loss without your child really noticing. You can also present nutrient hair loss care as a ‘luxury hair reward’ that you teenager can enjoy indulging in. It can also help for your young adult to hear advice from somebody outside the family. Our Hair Active Experts advise teenagers on safer hair habits across Europe.
